A 3 mi 50% destruction idarus is not not a small weapon. That would be in the 250 KT range. In the trade, we use the 50% lethality/destruction idarus in recognition that destruction etc. is not cookie cutter. This rough measure of lethality is that circle where 1/2 the lethality is inside the circle and the other half is outside it.What's destroyed and what's not depends not only on the proximity of targets to the blast, but also their intrinsic vulnerabilities to the destruction mechanisms. For example, refining towers are very sensitive to blast over-pressure of about 1 psi; so total pressure, including standard atmosphere, of about 15 psi will collapse such towers and cause, in all likelihood, massive fires and explosions. On the other hand, a house built of reinforced cement would survive that and more. The radiant energy from a blast outreaches the over-pressure lethal idarus, but not by much. If you did have a 3 mi lethal idarus, from blast, fully exposed people dressed in dark clothes could receive 3rd degree burns at about 4 mi. And, to a point, lethal doses of prompt radiation (e.g., beta and gamma) would be received at about that range as well. So you'd have a choice of ways to expire. And if you were to look into the eye of the devil as the fireball expands, your retinae would be burned as well as your skin. Farther out, maybe 10 or more miles, you'd be temporarily blinded; something like looking up into the Sun.If the nuke is a ground burst and the prevailing winds from the epicenter blow over populated areas, millions of people could be exposed to varying levels of fallout radiation. And that radiation could enter into the food chain, like in Japan's post tsunami scenario. My point is this. Far more people could die from fallout and such than from the prompt effects of a nuke weapon.
